Men's Basketball Schedule Announced

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma announced its 2007-08 men's basketball schedule today, a slate that features 31 regular season games, 17 regular season home contests, appearances in the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic and the inaugural Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series, and as many as 14 games televised by national networks.

Reflecting the difficult nature of OU's schedule is the fact that Jeff Capel's Sooners will play at least 14 games against teams that participated in 2007 postseason play and at least 10 against teams that made the NCAA Tournament.  Those numbers could rise to 16 and 12 depending on the unfolding of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic.

Oklahoma begins its regular season earlier than ever before as part of the 16-team 2K Sports College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer.  The Sooners will be one of four teams to host a four-team regional (OU's regional field has yet to be announced) on Nov. 8 and 9.  If they win their opening two games they will travel to New York to play two more contests against potential foes Connecticut, Kentucky and Memphis (other regional hosts) inside Madison Square Garden.

OU's other featured non-conference games will be played at USC (Nov. 29 as part of the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series; FSN), at home versus Tulsa (Dec. 5; Sooner Sports Network), at home against Arkansas (Dec. 15; ESPN2), versus Gonzaga (Dec. 20 in the All-College Classic; ESPN2) and at West Virginia (Dec. 29; ESPN2).

Kentucky (second round), Memphis (Elite Eight), Gonzaga, USC (Sweet 16) and Arkansas all competed in the 2007 NCAA Tournament, while West Virginia won the postseason NIT.

"It doesn't take the smartest person in the world to figure out that we have an extremely tough schedule this year," said Capel.  "This schedule will present a great challenge for our young team.  But we embrace that challenge and I know that the staff and players are looking forward to battling game in and game out.

"Playing non-conference teams like USC, Arkansas, Gonzaga, West Virginia, and perhaps even UConn, Kentucky or Memphis, certainly won't be easy.  But playing those opponents will make us better and help prepare us for our always-difficult Big 12 schedule."

OU's Big 12 Conference season will begin Jan. 12 at home versus Kansas State (ESPN Plus).  Other league home games will be played against Texas Tech (Jan. 19; ESPN Plus), Oklahoma State (Jan. 28; ESPN Big Monday), Texas (Feb. 6; ESPN), Iowa State (Feb. 13; ESPN Plus), Baylor (Feb. 19; ESPN Plus), Texas A&M (March 1, ESPN) and Missouri (March 8; ABC).

Big 12 road games will be played at Kansas (Jan. 14; ESPN Big Monday), Baylor (Jan. 26; ESPN Plus), Texas A&M (Feb. 2; ESPN Plus), Colorado (Feb. 9; ESPNU), Texas Tech (Feb. 16; ESPN Plus), Texas (Feb. 23; ABC), Nebraska (Feb. 27) and Oklahoma State (March 5; ESPN Plus).

In addition to the Dec. 5 Tulsa contest, games slated for telecast on the Sooner Sports Network include Alcorn State (Nov. 12), Morehead State (Nov. 21), Stephen F. Austin (Dec. 8) and Rice (Jan. 5).

The 2007-08 season unofficially gets underway when the Sooners host an exhibition game on Oct. 31 against Rockhurst University.  A second home exhibition will be played Nov. 2 versus Fayetteville State.
