NORMAN, Okla. -- What is it like to be at the center of 85,000
screaming fans who have been waiting for the start
of football season since January?
It's a feeling the Sooner football team experiences
each fall but one that definitely
never gets old.
This year, the
OU Athletics Department is giving Sooner fans the opportunity
to experience that feeling firsthand, kicking off its
first ever in-game auction experience with the season
opener against North Texas on Sept. 1. One lucky
Sooner and a guest will get to go down on the sidelines
to watch pre-game warm-ups and feel the earth shake
when the team runs out onto Owen Field.
"This is a very exciting time for Oklahoma Athletics
because we have the chance to bring our fans closer
to the action and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said
Tim George, Assistant A.D. for Marketing and Promotions.
"Each of our in-game experiences will feature a basic
package which includes two tickets to the game, two
Sooner Tailgate passes and the opportunity to be down
on the sidelines for pre-game warm-ups. On top of that,
we are offering a unique experience during the North
Texas game by taking the fans out to midfield for the
coin toss."
Oklahoma's first auction experience, "Spend a
Morning With the Sooners", proved to be a huge success
and, according to auction winner Al Ragsdale, it exceeded
all his expectations. Ragsdale and his daughter, Courtney
Summers, had the opportunity to go behind the scenes
during Meet the Sooners Day, including
spending some one-on-one time with Coach Stoops following
his preseason press conference.
With the North Texas experience being the first
associated with an actual game, former student-athlete
and current Athletics Department Administrative Assistant
Anne Carter, who will escort the winner and their guest
prior to kickoff, anticipates the satisfaction
level will rise to new heights.
"This truly is the ultimate Sooner fan experience,"
Carter said. "I can't think of a better way to kick
off the 2007 season than to be down on the field for
the start of it all. I am again looking
forward to helping the winner have the best experience
possible."
The winner and their guest will start the day at the
Sooner Tailgate in the Everest Indoor Training Facility
and be treated to complimentary food and drinks courtesy
of local merchants. After the tailgate, they will head
over to Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial
Stadium to watch the team go through pre-game preparations
from the sidelines.
After watching the band march out on
the field, seeing the Schooner makes its inaugural
lap and being front and center when the Sooners run
out on the field, the experience will culminate
at midfield during the coin toss before
the winners head to their seats to enjoy the game.
Bidding for the season opener experience ends at 10
p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 26.
