Former Sooners Begin Play at 107th U.S. Amateur

NORMAN, Okla. -- Former OU golfers Justin Fraley and J.J. Wood tee it up today in the opening round of the 107th U.S. Amateur held at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif.
The tournament is being contested on The Olympic Club's two courses. The par-70 Lakeside Course will play at 6,948 yards while the par-70 Ocean Course, which will be used for the first two days of stroke play only, will play at 6,786 yards.
Fraley starts his round on the Lakeside's 10th tee at 12:10 p.m CDT and will be paired with George Cestia and Tripp Kuhlke.
Wood begins play at 5:45 p.m. CDT on the first tee at the Lakeside Course and is paired with Phillip Mollixa and Henry Zaytoun III.
Wood, a native of Yuma, Ariz., competed for the Sooners last season after transferring from Pepperdine. Wood started all 12 tournaments during the 2006-07 season while pursuing a master's degree at OU. His season stroke average of 74.26 was the lowest on the OU squad and he posted seven top-30 finishes.
Fraley joined the OU squad in the spring of 2005 after transferring from Odessa College and was a member of the 2006 Sooner squad which earned Oklahoma its first Big 12 title.
The U.S. Amateur Championship is open to amateur golfers who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4. The USGA accepted 7,398 entries for the 2007 U.S. Amateur. Through sectional qualifying, the field for the tournament has been narrowed to 315 players.
