Summer League Baseball Update No. 2

NORMAN, Okla. -- Throughout the summer, SoonerSports.com will bring fans weekly updates of current Sooners competing in the numerous summer baseball leagues around the country. Fans can also access information on former Sooners playing in Major League Baseball and its minor league affiliates.

The second installment, along with links to each of the players' statistics, are listed below:

COLLEGIATE SUMMER LEAGUES

Pitching well in the Texas Collegiate League is Gary Poynter (Weatherford Wranglers), a junior college transfer set to join the Sooners in 2008. Poynter has one win and no loses in six appearances (one start). He has struck out six in 10 2/3 innings of work and has limited batters to a .164 clip against him.

Noteworthy

-Another OU newcomer in 2008, Matt Hoffman (Midwest Nationals), continues to perform in the Premier Baseball League, hitting .436 with three homeruns and 16 RBIs.

-Sophomore Andrew Doyle (Hyannis Mets) is 2-0 with a 3.60 and four strikeouts in the Cape Cod League.

OKLAHOMA IN THE MINORS

Recent draftee, Aaron Reza has moved up from "short A" ball with the Lowell Spinners to play for the Greenville Drive (A). Also, Joe Dunigan (Everett AquaSox) is hitting .276 with three RBIs and Jackson Williams (Salem-Keizer Volcanoes) has driven in four runs off five hits in seven games played. Finally, Brad Burns (Kingsport Mets) is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA.

Noteworthy

-Daniel McCutchen (Tampa Yankees) has a record of 8-1 with an ERA of 2.77 with 55 strikeouts.

-Eddie Cornejo is hitting .297 with two homers and 16 RBIs in AA for the Midland Rockhounds (Oakland Athletics).

SOONERS IN THE MAJORS

Since starting the season on the disabled list, Greg Norton (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) has had a solid last ten games, hitting .296 with a homerun and three RBIs.

Noteworthy

-Greg Dobbs is hitting .375 over the last 10 games with five RBIs. The former Sooner is hitting .297 with seven homers and 33 RBIs this season.
