NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma outfielder Joe Dunigan was drafted in the fifth round by the Seattle Mariners on Thursday. The junior was the 165th pick overall and joined Jackson Williams (43rd overall) as the two Sooners drafted on the first day of the 2007 MLB Draft.
The last time Oklahoma had two players selected in the first five rounds of the same draft was 1995. Mark Redman (13th overall) and Russ Ortiz (103rd overall) were drafted in the first and fourth rounds that year, respectively.
It marks the second selection in Dunigan's career. He was chosen in the 41st round of the 2004 draft by the Montreal Expos following his high school career at St. Ignatius College Prep. He is the highest drafted outfielder from the University of Oklahoma since 1994. Jerry Whittaker was selected 60th overall (second round) that year by the Chicago White Sox.

In 26 Big 12 games, he was the team's top slugger in the conference after hitting .384 with seven homers and 24 RBIs.
The Chicago, Ill., native enjoyed his best season as a Sooner as the team's batting champion with a .352 batting average. He also led the the team with 11 home runs, 54 RBIs, 128 total bases, 29 walks and a .584 slugging percentage.
Dunigan finished the year on a career-high, 15-game hitting streak and ranked in the top 10 of eight different Big 12 offensive categories at season's end.
The only other player selected on Thursday with OU ties was Irving (Texas) High School pitcher Blake Beavan. The right-hander signed with OU in September, but was taken by the Texas Rangers with the 17th overall pick.
