April 23, 2007 | Men's Golf
HUTCHINSON, Kan. The OU men's golf team stands in a fifth-place tie at the Big 12 Championship after firing a 604 (+44) over the first two rounds Monday at the par-70, 6,593-yard Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchinson, Kan. The Sooners, who were in fifth place after their 303 (+23) first round, shot a 301 (+21) in the afternoon and trail first-place Oklahoma State by 25 strokes.
Oklahoma freshman Jesse Schutte posted rounds of 75 and 72 to lead the Sooners and is in a tie for eighth place at 147 (+7). The Florence, Ore., native finished fifth in his last tournament, the ASU Thunderbird Invitational (April 13-15), where he carded rounds of 68, 70 and 70.
Schutte started his second round with seven straight pars before a bogey at the 417-yard par-4 eighth. A par on No. 9 sent the freshman to the back nine at +1. Schutte would drop to +3 through 12 after bogeys at the 10th and 12th but would pick up two shots with birdies at No. 14 and No. 16. A bogey at the par-5 17th and a par at the closing hole sends Schutte to the final round six shots back of the lead.

Senior Nick Sheedy is tied for 28th after rebounding from an opening-round 80 by shooting 72 in his afternoon round. After opening with six straight pars, Sheedy found red figures in round two with a birdie at the 512-yard par-5 seventh. The Burlington, Iowa native dropped a shot at No. 9 to make the turn at even par. After a double-bogey six at the par-4 12th, Sheedy would climb back to even with back-to-back birdies at the 14th and 15th. Sheedy bogeyed the final two par-4s (16 and 18) to finish his second round at +2. Sheedy has posted top-40 finishes in his last three starts.
J.J. Wood is in a tie for 31st at 13-over after rounds of 76 and 77. Starting his afternoon round with five pars, Wood bogeyed No. 6 but came right back with a birdie at the seventh. Wood would triple-bogey the final hole of the front nine, making the turn in 38 (+3). Wood carded four pars, three bogeys, a double-bogey and a birdie in shooting a back-nine 4-over-par 39, finishing the second round at 7-over. Transferring from Pepperdine last summer, the Yuma, Ariz., native has carded four top-30 finishes on the year to lead OU.
Ben Blundell carded rounds of 75 and 80, finishing the day in a tie for 43rd. Blundell made the turn in round two at 1-over after an opening nine that included three birdies. After pars at the 10th and 11th, the Rowlett, Texas, native ran into trouble with three consecutive double-bogeys to jump to +7. A triple-bogey at No. 16 was followed with a bogey at the 17th, but Blundell responded with a birdie at the closing hole to finish his second round at +10.
Rounding out the OU scoring was junior Phillip Bryan who was two strokes back of Blundell at 17-over. Bryan, who leads the current squad in rounds played as a Sooner, fired rounds of 77 and 80 and stands in a 48th-place tie. Bryan scattered six bogeys, two double-bogeys and 10 pars in his second round to finish round two at +10.
OSU leads the team standings by five strokes over first-round leader Texas A&M. The Cowboys, who stand at +19 on the day, turned in the best second round with a 289 (+9). A&M recorded the best first round (by five strokes) with its 285 (+5). A&M's first-round 285 was two strokes shy of the Big 12 first-round record of 283 set by Oklahoma in 2002 (also at Prairie Dunes).
Texas Tech's Oscar Floren leads the individual standings by a stroke over Robert Gates of Texas A&M after rounds of 72 and 69. Floren's second-round 69 was one of just two scores in red figures on Monday.
Tuesday's final round will begin at 8:00 a.m. CDT. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
