No. 9 OU Hosts TWU Saturday Night

NCAA Announces Championship Field

April 16, 2007 | Women's Gymnastics

NORMAN, Okla. The NCAA announced today the teams and individuals that qualified to compete for the 2007 Women's Gymnastics Championships.

The championships, hosted by the University of Utah, will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the Jon M. Huntsman Center, April 26-28.

OU advanced to the National Championships by virtue of a second place finish at the NCAA Central Regional, April 14 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.  The Sooners tied Iowa State for second place at the end of competition with a 195.925. A tiebreaker was determined by adding the sixth score to every event. After the tiebreaker, the Sooners came out on top, defeating the Cyclones 233.40 to 233.20.

The last time a national qualifier out of the Central Regional was determined by a tiebreaker was in 2003 between Auburn and Central Michigan.

Oklahoma has now qualified for the last four NCAA Championships, a school record.

NCAA Central Regional Recap

Joining the Sooners in session one of the preliminary round are Oregon State, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Nebraska.  Four of the session's six teams (Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Nebraska) made it to the Super Six last season.

Competing in the second session are Utah, Stanford, Michigan, UCLA, LSU and Denver.

The top three teams from each session will advance to the Super Six competition Friday, April 27 at 7 p.m.

“Our session includes a lot of veteran teams,” OU head coach K.J. Kindler said.  “They have a lot of NCAA experience and they've all had great seasons.  We know it's going to take a mistake-free performance in order to advance.”

Kindler is no stranger to the Super Six, having led Iowa State to the school's first appearance in the NCAA finals last season.

The women's gymnastics championships consist of 12 teams and 12 all-around competitors (who are not on a qualifying team) and individual event specialists.  The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors from each regional received automatic berths to the national championships.

In addition, the event winners at the regional championships advance to the national championships (in their specific event) if they were not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.

Preliminary team and all-around competition will be conducted in two sessions Thursday, April 26 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.  The top four individuals from each session in each event (plus ties) from the preliminary team and all-around competition will also compete in the individual-event competition Saturday, April 28 at 7 p.m.
