Hazewinkel Advances to Final

Hazewinkel Wins Greco-Roman Title

NORMAN, Okla. -- Sooner senior Sam Hazewinkel won the 55kg/121 pound U.S. National title in Greco-Roman wrestling at the U.S. National Championships held at the Las Vegas Convention Center on April 7.

The unseeded Hazewinkel beat the second-seeded Mango 0-8, 6-0, 6-4 in the quarterfinals before he downed the top-seeded Durlacher 2-1, 3-1 in the finals at 55 kg/121 lbs.

Hazewinkel was named Outstanding Wrestler in Greco-Roman wrestling at the U.S. Nationals after knocking off World University champion Spenser Mango and World bronze medalist Lindsey Durlacher in Las Vegas.

Last month Hazewinkel became a four-time All-American for the University of Oklahoma.  He finished second behind Durlacher at the 2005 and 2006 U.S. World Team Trials. Hazewinkel also won the U.S. Nationals in 2005.

Hazewinkel also was named the TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for April 3-9.

Hazewinkel finished his Sooner career as a four-time All-American with an overall record of 131-10, three 125-pound Big 12 Championships, three third-place finishes and one runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships.
