OU Heads to Final Round in Eighth

March 05, 2007 | Men's Golf

NORMAN, Okla.   The University of Oklahoma men's golf team carded a 14-over 298 team score Monday afternoon during the second round of the 15-team USC Collegiate Invitational in Westlake Village, Calif., and sits in a tie for eighth place headed into Tuesday's final round.

Oklahoma holds the second best score of all unranked teams and is three strokes ahead of 11th-ranked Coastal Carolina and five clear of conference rival Texas Tech (the Red Raiders are ranked 35th in the latest Golf Week rankings).

After shooting an 8-over 292 in Monday morning's opening round, the Sooners are 22 strokes behind tournament host USC, but only five strokes out of fifth place after the opening day of play at the North Ranch Country Club.

The field, featuring six teams ranked in Golf Weeks's latest top-15 rankings, found tougher course conditions during afternoon play as each team is at level par or higher headed into the final round.

“I felt that we competed well with some of the best teams across the country,” said head coach Jim Ragan. “We left a few shots out on the course today but for the most part I was pleased with our effort.”

Leading the Sooners in round two was senior Nick Sheedy, who rebounded from his first-round 79 with a 1-over-par 72.  The Burlington, Iowa, native had four birdies to go along with three bogeys and a double at the par-4 fifth.

J.J. Wood followed up Monday morning's opening-round 71 with a 3-over-par 74 and sits in a tie for 17th.  The Pepperdine transfer, who finished 10th in this tournament last season, has been steady throughout with 29 pars, two birdies and just four bogeys.

Phillip Bryan and Jesse Schutte both carded second-round 76s.  Schutte sits in a tie for 25th at 146 (+4) while Bryan is two strokes back at 148.

OU freshman Ben Blundell shot an 80 in each round today.

USC's Jamie Lovemark fired a second-round 7-under-par 64 and is tied in the individual standings with Loyola Marymount's Brian Locke at 136 (-6).

Final round action at the par-71, 6,742-yard layout is set to begin tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. (CST). Visit SoonerSports.com for a complete wrap-up following Tuesday's play.
