Baseball Wins Tenth Straight

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Sooners' winning streak hit 10 games after defeating San Diego State, 4-1, on Friday at Tony Gwynn Stadium in the first game of the 2007 Tony Gwynn Classic.

OU took an early 2-0 lead after two innings and backed it up with two more runs in the sixth and solid pitching from Stephen Porlier and Nich Conaway. The duo combined to strike out 10 batters and allowed one unearned run on four hits.

“This was a big win for us to get back on track on the road,” said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. “San Diego State is a well- coached team with a future hall-of-famer as their head coach and one of the most experienced staffs in the country.”

Porlier (4-0) turned in another solid performance with a season-high eight strikeouts in six innings pitched. The Sooners' starter limited the Aztecs to three hits and two walks for his team-leading fourth win of the year.

“Another stellar performance by Stephen,” added Golloway. “He continues to set the tone for us on Fridays and pitched six strong innings tonight.”

Conaway closed the door for his first save of the year after striking out two over the final three frames.

Joe Dunigan, the second hitter of the game, jump started the OU offense with his third home run of the year, a solo shot that carried over the right-field fence in the top of the first inning. Dunigan finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

Jackson Williams' sacrifice fly to center field plated Cory Williamson and put OU head 2-0 in the second inning.

The lead was extended to four runs with Aaron Baker's two-run single in the fifth frame with the bases loaded.

Baker's 1-for-4 performance on Friday extended his team-best hitting streak to 16 games. The freshman has recorded multiple RBI outings in six of the last nine games and leads the Sooners with 22 RBIs this season.

“Aaron came up big for us again,” added Golloway. “He was at-bat at the right time and delivered two crucial runs for us in the fifth.”

The Sooners scored all four runs off SDSU starter Steven Hirschfeld (2-1), who struck out five and surrendered four hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Garrett Green scored the Aztecs' only run late in the game after OU committed two errors in the seventh frame.

OU will return to action on Saturday at 5 p.m. (CT) against No. 22 San Diego (14-8) at Petco Park, home of MLB's San Diego Padres. The Sooners' Ryan Mottern (2-2, 3.80 ERA) is expected to start opposite the Toreros' Matt Couch (3-0, 3.97 ERA).
