Koncak Wins Second Big 12 Honor

Sooner Women Upset No. 6 Nebraska

February 02, 2007 | Women's Gymnastics

LINCOLN, Neb. Senior Brittney Koncak-Schumann claimed her second all-around title of the season, and the No. 8 OU women's gymnastics team upset sixth-ranked Nebraska, 195.075-195.050, Friday night in the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

The Sooners had not defeated their Big 12 conference rivals since the 2004 Big 12 Championships.

"It's amazing," Koncak-Schumann said.  "It's the best feeling to know how hard we worked and to really come together as a team.  It was a true team effort and I'm so proud."

OU trailed by 0.4 after two rotations, but cut the Nebraska lead to 0.1 on the floor exercise.  The Sooners grabbed the lead on their last event, balance beam, with a 48.575 total, while the Huskers turned in their lowest event score of the night with a 48.450.

Final Scores

Koncak-Schumann tied for second (9.85) on the uneven bars, and finished fourth (9.825) on the floor, but clinched her all-around win with a 9.9 on the beam.  She shared the beam title with Nebraska's Tricia Woo and Emily Parsons.

"Before Brittney got on the beam, I told her 'You have to be near perfect.  If you are, we win.'," Kindler said.  "That's a lot of pressure, but she knew that already because that's the kind of athlete she is.  She came through with flying colors."

Oklahoma started on the uneven bars, posting a team total of 48.875 led by Koncak-Schumann's 9.85 and a 9.825 by classmate Lori Winn.

The Cornhuskers extended their lead on the second rotation, posting a 49.050 on the bars.  OU's Kiara Redmond, who posted a perfect 10.0 on the apparatus against Texas Woman's University last week, led the Sooners with a 9.875 to finish second.

OU closed the gap with a meet-high 48.800 on floor and captured the win with the clutch performances on beam.  In addition to Koncak-Schumann's 9.825, Redmond recorded a 9.8 and sophomore Ashley Jackson scored a 9.7 on her 20th birthday.

"It was a good meet, but it wasn't a great meet for us," Kindler said.  "We definitely have several areas we can still improve on, but I'm very proud of what our team did here.  It's very hard to come into Lincoln and win."
