NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 21-ranked OU wrestling team could not overcome an early deficit, losing to No. 3 Oklahoma State Sunday in Stillwater, 21-9.
Oklahoma recorded three wins on the afternoon against the in-state rival. Junior Will Rowe was the first Sooner to put points on the board in a 10-4 decision over Quinten Fuentes in the 149-pound bout.
Seniors Joshua Weitzel and Joel Flaggert won back-to-back at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively. Weitzel scored a 3-2 decision over Cody Hill after being awarded a riding point at the conclusion of the third period. Flaggert won in a 12-10 decision over Clayton Foster.
"There were a couple of bright spots, but overall, I am very disappointed in our showing," head coach Jack Spates said. "This team works hard and we are going to have to bounce back after this difficult loss."
To start the match, OSU's Ben Ashmore defeated 125-pound freshman Joey Fio by a 6-0 decision, and Coleman Scott made the team score 6-0 with a win over 133-pound Brian Shelton. Scott won by a narrow margin of 1-0.
Zack Bailey was defeated in the 141-pound match by Nathan Morgan by a 9-4 decision. Rowe's win in the next bout made the score 9-3, but three straight OSU victories put the match out of reach for the Sooners.
Newly McSpadden of Oklahoma State won in a 6-1 decision over 157-pound sophomore Chad Terry, and 165-pound senior Max Dean was defeated by Jake Dieffenbach by a 3-2 decision to make the team score 15-3.
Jeff James fell to Brandon Mason 5-0 in the 174-pound battle, followed up by two Sooner victories by Weitzel and Flaggert. Jared Rosholt then scored a 6-3 decision over Sooner Nathan Fernandez in the heavyweight battle to end the dual between the two in-state foes.
"This was an opportunity for us today," Spates said. "We didn't execute well and didn't take advantage of the chance to beat a great OSU team, and that's disappointing. I have no doubt we will learn from this and get things back on track."
Oklahoma (4-1) will look to bounce back from the loss in a road-dual versus The University of Central Oklahoma on Friday, Dec. 7. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Edmond.
