IRVING, Texas -- Oklahoma's Amanda Thompson was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Thompson earned the honor for the first time after posting her first career double-double with a 14-point, 14-rebound effort to help the No. 9 Sooners rally against No. 21 Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich., Sunday, Dec. 16.
Thompson more than doubled her season scoring and rebounding averages in the game. She totaled 10 points, on 5-of-6 field goal shooting, and nine rebounds in the second half alone as she led OU from an 11-point halftime deficit to an 11-point final margin of victory in the Spartans first home loss of the season.
With her Whitney Young High School teammates and mother, Wanda, in attendance, the Chicago, Ill., native set career single-game bests in points, total rebounds and offensive rebounds. Her seven offensive boards were a game high and one-third of OU's team total. Thompson also had four blocks.
Thompson also matched a career high with three steals, which converted into five points during OU's three-minute, 11-3 run to start the second half.
It was the fifth straight week a Sooner was honored by the Big 12. Two weeks ago, Courtney Paris earned player of the week honors and Danielle Robinson has been named rookie of the week three times.
Nebraska's Kaitlyn Burke was chosen as Big 12 Rookie of the Week.
The Sooners host Central Arkansas Thursday, Dec. 20, at 6 p.m., at the Lloyd Noble Center. The first 3,000 fans through the doors will receive the final poster in a set of five collectable OU women's basketball prints.
