NORMAN, Okla. -- The first two games of the annual Red/White Series were each decided by one run, late in the contest, and game three on Friday followed suit.
Redshirt freshman Elliott Blair broke a 10-10 tie in the bottom of the ninth and singled in senior Jarod Freeman to give the White team a 3-0 series sweep.
Senior Jake McCarter (2-0, save), who recorded the win in game one and the save in game two, put together another solid relief performance to nail down the game. Freshman Ryan Duke (0-2) took the loss.
"The coaching staff has been impressed with the intensity of these games and how close they have been," said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. "I was happy with both teams today, as they battled back and forth for a full nine innings."
For the first time in the series, White took the game's initial lead with sophomore Zach Hedges' sacrifice-fly in the first and junior Trey Sperring's solo homer to left-center field.
White increased its 2-0 lead to three runs when senior Aljay Davis scored on Sperring's hard-hit ball hit to short, which was ruled an error.
In the top of the fourth, Red got on the board with a five-run frame. Junior J.T. Wise drove in the first run on a RBI single to center. Senior Mike Gosse followed and plated freshman Matt Harughty on a ground out to first and freshman Garrett Buechele tied the game with a RBI double down the left-field line. Freshman Casey Johnson drove in the go-ahead run on a single to center and senior Drew Roberts singled down the right-field line to give Red a 5-3 advantage.
White countered in the bottom of the fourth with six runs. Sophomore Bryant Hernandez led off the frame with a home run that cleared the scoreboard in left field. After a bases-loaded walk tied the game at five, Hedges cleared the bases with a three-run double and later scored on a wild pitch.
Trailing 9-5 in the sixth, Red narrowed the margin to two runs on senior Ryan Mottern's two-run homer over board in left.
Sperring increased White's lead to 10-7 with a RBI double down the line in left and Red came back to tie the game at 10 runs apiece in the top of the eighth. Freshman Garrett Buechele's two-run single followed a bases-loaded walk issued to Gosse.
Mark Rodgers (White) and Chris Callahan (Red) from KOCO Sports Xtra (ABC Ch.5 in Oklahoma City) served as honorary coaches for the game. The television station will air a behind-the-scenes special on the OU baseball team this Sunday at 10 p.m. and again on Nov. 25.
With the series sweep complete, the Sooners will conclude the fall season with a intrasquad on Saturday. The session starts at 1 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
