NORMAN, Okla. -- The Sooner wrestling team won their ninth straight team title in dominant fashion at the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic in Brockport, N.Y., prevailing in eight of ten weight classes.
"It was truly a great showing for the Sooners," head coach Jack Spates said. "This is a very young team and I am excited about our performance."
Aside from winning the Classic, eight Sooners won individual titles at the event: Zach Bailey at 141 pounds, Will Rowe at 149 pounds, Chad Terry at 157 pounds, Max Dean at 165 pounds, Jeff James at 174 pounds, Joshua Weitzel at 184 pounds, Joel Flaggert at 197 pounds and Nathan Fernandez in the heavyweight division.
Zach Bailey was named most outstanding wrestler.
Other members of the Oklahoma squad also medaled in the event. Jake Jackson took second at 165 pounds, as did Brad Farmer in the heavyweight class. True freshman Joey Fio took fourth at 125 pounds.
Kyle Terry and Chris DeVilbiss both placed third at 141 and 157 pounds, respectively.
"One thing I learned about our team today is we have a lot of great competitors," Spates continued. "This team will only get better from here."
OU returns to Norman to prepare for the first home match of the season Thursday, Nov. 15 against North Carolina State at 7 p.m. at the Howard McCasland Fieldhouse.
Gates open at 6 p.m. and admission is free to the public. Fans also can enjoy 50-cent hot dog night from the concessions.
