NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma freshman Ana-Maria Constantinescu made her National Indoor Championships debut Thursday, Nov. 1 in Columbus, Ohio.
The Bucharest, Romania native, who entered the tournament leading the Sooners with an 8-3 fall record, advanced to the second round after defeating Georgia Tech's Kirsten Flower in a tough three set match.
Constantinescu fell behind 5-3 in the first set, but pulled out a 7-5 win. She went on to fall 7-5 in the second set before claiming the victory 6-3 in the third set.
"Ana-Maria played very well today," said assistant coach Raluca Gheorghe. "Her serve was very strong and she competed hard. The level of competition here is very high and she played very well."
The Sooner will return to action Friday as she faces Megan Falcon, the No. 1 seed from Louisiana State University.
"Today was a very good match for me," said Constantinescu. "I am really looking forward to tomorrow."
The rest of the women's tennis team will begin play in San Diego, Calif., Friday morning. Check SoonerSports.com for results from both Columbus and San Diego.
