Homecoming 2007: Dynamic Duos
October 05, 2007 | Athletics
NORMAN, Okla. -- One of the great traditions at college campuses across the nation is Homecoming. It serves as a special opportunity for current students to display their school spirit while welcoming alumni back to once again experience all the great things the University has to offer.
On Saturday, Oct. 13, Oklahoma will celebrate its 91st Homecoming Game by welcoming the University of Missouri to Owen Field.
Along with the game, a number of pratices typically associated with homecoming include the crowning of royalty, student group competitions and of course, the parade. The parade, in fact, is the longest-standing Homecoming tradition at OU, with the Pride making the annual march east on Boyd St., starting at Elm and stopping by Boyd House, where the President typically overlooks from his front porch, before continuing on through campus past the Student Union and Memorial Stadium via Asp Ave.
In addition to the parade, however, OU claims a number of unique traditions all its own. The colorful Window Paint Competition on Campus Corner and the Sidewalk Chalk Competition in front of Bizzel Library are just a couple of the many events which allow current students the opportunity to show their pride in the University.
Inspired by the Sooner Schooner-pulling horses, Boomer and Sooner, this year's Homecoming theme is "Dynamic Duos".
Kristian DeMont, a senior majoring in industrial engineering, is serving as the Executive Chair of the 2007 Homecoming Committe and has been working hard planning all of this year's events. With the Dynamic Duos theme in mind, DeMont and the Committee are putting a new spin on some of the old traditions.
All competition elements throughout this year's Homecoming week must incorporate a Dynamic Duo into their design. Some of the Dynamic Duos appearing throughout the week will be Bonnie & Clyde, Rock 'n' Roll and Buzz and Woody from the animated movie 'Toy Story'. In addition, each competition requires the Duo to be presented in a specific setting or performing a specific task. Wednesday's Window Paint Competition requires the Dynamic Duo to be in action on the football field, while the Duo must show school spirit at the Sidewalk Chalk competition on Thursday.
"Homecoming is designed to be a fun event and to bring current students and alumni together," DeMont said. "In planning everything this year, I have not only learned a lot but am having the time of my life doing it."
DeMont hopes that same experience will resonate with everyone who participates or witnesses this year's events. For a complete schedule of the 2007 Homecoming events, see the schedule below. Click here for a printable pdf version.
