NORMAN, Okla. -- Four former OU men's golfers were among the 26 competitors that advanced to the second stage of the PGA Tour Q-school from the Lantana, Texas, sectional on Friday.
The quartet of Martin Flores (2001-04), Justin Fraley (2005-06), Cody Freeman (1999-2002) and Chris James (1996-99) all move on to the second round, which will be held Nov. 14-17 at one of six separate courses.
Freeman ended up as the top Sooner qualifier after a final-round, 8-under-par 64, resulting in a tie for fifth. James finished in 11th at +1 after rounds of 73, 71, 69 and 74. Flores finished the first stage with rounds of 71 and 71, standing in a tie for 14th. Fraley advanced with his 24th-place finish after rounds of 73, 77, 70 and 73.
Stay tuned to SoonerSports.com for a second-stage recap as the foursome of former OU lettermen continue the quest for their card.
Played in three stages at the end of each season, the grueling PGA TOUR National Qualifying Tournament eventually determines the 25 players (and ties) who receive their TOUR cards for the following year. Anyone else who advances to the final stage receives some kind of status on the Nationwide Tour.
The final stage is no picnic, though. Played over 108 holes, it's a pressure-packed, mind-draining, gut-check of a week that determines your job for the following year.
Some players, depending on their status on the PGA TOUR or other worldwide tours, are automatically exempted into the final stage. Others get a free pass into the second. Some, though, must survive all three stages, and the task is an extremely difficult one.

There are 12 first-stage events, held across the country from Oct. 23-Nov. 3, with fields of approximately 78 players. A predetermined number of those -- generally the low 19, 20 or 21 and ties -- advance to the second stage of qualifying, which will be held at six sites from Nov. 14-17.
