Fayetteville, Ark. - The women's tennis team traveled to Fayetteville, Ark Saturday to compete for a spot at the ITA National Indoor Tournament held in February. The qualifying tournament was set up to play team style duals, with three teams in the draw.
Oklahoma was scheduled to play Wichita State at 10 a.m. Saturday; however, Wichita State dropped, advancing the Sooners to the finals where they faced the University of Arkansas. OU started off dropping the doubles points to the Razorbacks after being defeated at the No. 2 and 3 spots.
At the No. 2 spot the Sooner duo of Maria Kalashnikova and Rachael Cox fell 8-2 to Mayori Franco and Nanar Airapetian.
Oklahoma was represented by senior Christ Baxley and sophomore Elena Antakova at the No. 3 spot. The duo fell 8-3 to Arkansas' Audrey Bordeleau and Delia Demaschin. Down 1-0 the Sooners fought to stay in the match, but the Razorbacks did not let up.
The freshman standout Constantinescu, dropped her collegiate record to 8-3 after she fell 6-2, 6-2 to Arkansas' Aurelija Miseviciute at the No. 1 spot.
At No. 5 Arkansas'Audrey Bordeleau defeated Antakova 6-2, 6-2, putting Arkansas up 4-0 and giving them the win over OU.
At the No. 6 singles spot senior Rachael Cox was defeated by Delia Demaschin 6-0, 6-1.
"I'm disappointed that we did not play better," said head coach Mark Johnson. "The girls played hard, but we have some things to work on and it was not our best showing."
After Arkansas reached four points, play was ceased.
The Sooners will return to action Nov. 2-4 when the team heads to San Diego for the San Diego State Invitational. That same weekend freshman Constantinescu will head to Columbus, Ohio for the individual ITA Indoor Championships.
