NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma women's tennis team was offered a bid Wednesday to compete for a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships held in February.
Oklahoma will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday, Oct. 24 to play in a three team draw. The Sooners will first play Wichita State at 10 a.m. in a team style dual. The winner will then face Arkansas.
The draw was set based on the number of points each team earned at the ITA Regional Championships held Oct. 17-21, in Tulsa, Okla. Points were awarded based on the number players in each round. Arkansas walked away with the most points, giving them the automatic spot in the finals.
"Our team is really looking forward to the challenge," said head coach Mark Johnson. "This is the first time in a few years they have done a play-off and we are really glad to have the opportunity to compete."
Not only did the team earn a bid in Tulsa, but Sooner freshman Ana-Maria Constantinescu earned herself a bid to the individual National Indoor Championships held in Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 1-4.
"I was very pleased with how Ana-Maria played," said Johnson. "Very few freshmen go into that tournament and make it to the finals. She really had a great showing."
