SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A blistering 11-under-par second round shot the Oklahoma men's golf squad from a third-place tie to the top of the leaderboard with one round to play at the Santa Clara Invitational in San Jose, Calif., on Monday. The Sooners hold an eight-shot cushion heading into the final round after carding the lowest score in relation to par since the 1999 Taylor Made Red River Classic.
Oklahoma was paced by sophomore Tyler Rody who fired a 6-under-par 66 and stands in a tie for second, one shot off the lead of Nick Delio of Cal State Northridge. Rody's 66 marked a career-low for the Andover, Kan., native, besting his 2-under-par 69 shot in last week's Oklahoma Intercollegiate.
Two shots back at -5 was fellow sophomore Eric Durbin who sits in sixth with 18 holes to play. Durbin carded rounds of 71 and 69 on Monday and has not finished an event out of the top-20 on the fall.
2007 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Jesse Schutte also stands in red figures at -1 after rounds of 72 and 71. The Florence, Ore., product is in 11th place.
Rounding out the OU team scoring were Phillip Bryan and Ryan Sirman who stand at +3 (22nd) and +6 (38th), respectively.
Competing unattached from team scoring is freshman Liam Logan who had rounds of 76 and 74 to join Sirman at +6.
Final-round play begins Tuesday morning at 9:45 a.m. CT. Visit SoonerSports.com for a complete recap of final-day action as the Sooners close out the fall season at the Santa Clara Invitational.
