EDMOND, Okla. -- Hosting the second annual Oklahoma Intercollegiate, the OU men's golf squad finished the opening round in sixth place on Sunday at Oak Tree Golf Club in Edmond, Okla.

High winds gusting upwards of 30 mph resulted in an average score of 79.32 for the 11-team field at the 7,412-yard, par-71 layout.

Leading the way for the Sooners was Eric Durbin who fired a 5-over-par 76, finishing they day in a tie for eighth. Durbin entered this week's event with top-20 finishes in both `07 fall events.

"The golf course was in excellent condition and prepared to tour standards with U.S. Open similarities on the greens," said head coach Jim Ragan. "The wind was very much a factor early on, especially on the front nine which is a little more exposed and played tougher under those conditions."

Senior Phillip Bryan and sophomore Ben Blundell were two strokes back from Durbin after shooting 78, in a tie for 23rd. Andover, Kan., native Tyler Rody sits in a tie for 27th after shooting 79 while 2007 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Jesse Schutte shot 80 and sits in 35th.

"We are obviosuly displeased with the scores that we shot, but for a young team playing for the first time in these type of conditions, I thought we battled back and were able to play much better on the back nine," added Ragan.

Ryan Sirman led a pack of four Sooners playing as individuals after opening with a 9-over-par 80, standing 35th. Fellow freshman Cameron Meyers was a stroke back in a tie for 41st.

Rounding out the OU individual scoring were Spencer Rives and Liam Logan who shot 83 and 84, respectively.

"I am looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully building on the experience that these young guys gained today," said Ragan.

Texas A&M leads the team standings after opening with a 12-over-par 296. The Aggies recorded scores of 71, 73 and a pair of 76s.

In the medalist race, Texas Tech's Will Griffin was the only player in red figures on Sunday, opening with a 2-under-par 69 for a two-stroke lead.
