Diamond Dinner Kicks off New Season

NORMAN, Okla. -- A crowd of nearly 400 people gathered Friday night to kick off the 2007 University of Oklahoma baseball season, while also honoring three of the greats of years past. Former Sooners Geoff Geary, Eddie Fisher and L. Dale Mitchell all received special recognition.

Chuck Kelly, the voice of the Sooner baseball team, emceed the event, which was held at the Student Ballroom on the campus of the University of Oklahoma. Stevens Trucking was the title sponsor.

Later, Geary, Fisher and Andy Mitchell (L. Dale Mitchell's grandson) participated in a question and answer session, with members of the audience, after they were honored with framed Sooner jerseys.

For the first time, the banquet also featured an auction with OU memorablia. Some of the items on hand included a trip for two to watch the Sooners play in the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, a Mark Redman autographed Kansas City Royals jersey and an OU batting helmet signed by the 2007 Sooners.

OU head coach Sunny Golloway previewed the 2007 squad before the evening was concluded by a 2006 highlight video and autograph session with the special honorees and members of the 2007 Sooner baseball team.

"This is a great event for fans of OU baseball to not only get to see the current players but also the former players that helped build this program into what it is today," said Golloway. "It's always an honor to have the former Sooner greats come back to celebrate the great tradition of this program.

"I think all the players, past and present, have enjoyed this event over the past four years and its a tradition we look forward to continuing. The 2007 season is almost here and our club has been practicing hard despite the weather and is excited to get things rolling."

Opening day is exactly a week away for Oklahoma. The Sooners will meet Texas State in the UTPA Tournament in Edinburg, Texas., on Feb. 2. The home opener is set for Feb. 23 versus Western Illinois and the Big 12 opener is slated for March 23 against Texas A&M at L.Dale Mitchell Park.
