TULSA -- University of Oklahoma freshman Rob Sorrell made his collegiate debut a memorable one as he paced the field at the Hurricane Cross Country Festival Saturday morning.

Sorrell covered the four-mile course at Mohawk Park in 20 minutes, 23 seconds, out-running a trio of Tulsa harriers as the OU men's cross country team took top honors with 30 points, defeating Tulsa (33) and Oklahoma State (59).

OU freshman Matt Daniels (20:39) and junior Jason Coleman (20:42) were fourth and fifth, respectively. Freshman Jon Grey (20:53) finished eighth and junior Jason Penland (20:58) was tenth as all of Oklahoma's five scorers placed in the top 10.

The OU women, third place overall, used the meet to work on strategic running.

Senior Aja Clark (12:46) led a Sooner quintet across the finish line in the women's two-mile race.

Clark took 15th place, followed in 16th by Catherine Odell (12:46), Jessica Eldridge (18th, 12:47), Kristi Cook (19th, 12:47) and Ashley Storm (20th, 12:48).

Oklahoma State won on the women's side, scoring 17 points.  Host-team Tulsa was second with 38.

The Sooner men's and women's cross country teams return to action Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

NOTES: Sorrell becomes the first Sooner freshman on record (since 1981) to win in his debut and first overall since Noel Berkeley, then a junior, accomplished the feat in 1987 ... Sorrell is the first Sooner male ever to win at Mohawk Park ... Previous best finishes were second by Conor Holt (1995) and Joe McNair (2001) ... The victory is the first overall team win for the OU men in nine Hurricane Festival attempts ... The race was the first competitive cross country action for Coleman, Eldridge and Odell since 2004 (they were redshirted last season).
