Fraley Falls at U.S. Amateur

NORMAN, Okla. Former University of Oklahoma golfer Justin Fraley fell 1-up to Dustin Johnson in the opening round of match play at the U.S. Amateur, being held at historic Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

Wednesday's 18-hole match was extremely tight as the two battled back and forth all morning, neither player going more than 2-up on the opening nine. A bogey at No. 1 and a Johnson birdie at the par-3 4th put Fraley 2-down after four holes.

The pair matched pars at No. 5, before a Johnson bogey at the par-4 6th cut the deficit in half. After giving a hole back with a bogey at No. 7, Fraley once again found himself 1-down after Johnson bogeyed the par-3 8th.

Trading pars on the next three holes, a costly bogey on the 466 yard par-4 12th followed by double bogey at the par-3 13th put Fraley three back with five to play. The Rowlett, Texas, native responded with a birdie at No. 14, cutting the deficit to two.

After matching scores at the 642 yard par-5 15th, Fraley took advantage of Johnson's first bogey of the back nine with a par on No. 16, cutting the deficit to one with two holes to play.

Fraley was unable to take advantage of a Johnson bogey at No. 17 however, forcing him to win the 18th in order to send the match into a playoff.

Both players made birdie at the 474 yard par-4 closing hole, giving Johnson (Columbia, S.C.) the 1-up victory.
