DALLAS -- Big 12 women's basketball captured the conference attendance crown for the seventh consecutive year by totaling 971,011 fans for a 4,980 average in 2005-06, the NCAA announced.
The Big 12 holds the NCAA records for total attendance (1,002,251 in 2002) and average (5,381 in 2004). Last season's attendance of 971,011 was the league's third-highest behind 1,002,651 in 2001-02 and 990,036 in 2003-04.
Nine Big 12 schools were ranked in the Top 40 for average home attendance, led by Texas Tech in second with 11,935 fans per game. The Lady Raiders have been among the top four teams nationally in home attendance all 10 years since the inception of the Big 12 and in the top three the last seven seasons. Baylor, Iowa State and Oklahoma were also in the Top 10 rated sixth (7,717), seventh (7,667) and eighth (7,630) respectively. Kansas State (14th/6,281) and Texas (18th/5,636) were in the Top 25.
Oklahoma was fifth for all-game attendance (home, road, neutral) with a cumulative total of 231,864 fans at 36 games. Texas Tech was sixth with 226,878 spectators at 29 contests while Baylor was seventh with 218,969 at 33 outings.
Oklahoma ranked second for largest increase in average home attendance from 2004-05 to 2005-06, improving its average by 1,935 fans per game.
