Koncak Named Academic All-American

NORMAN, Okla. Brittney Koncak-Schumann, who has a 3.93 in health and sports science, became the latest Sooner student-athlete to earn first-team Academic All-America honors.

She was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's At-Large team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Koncak-Schumann, of McQueeney, Texas, was one of 16 women named to the first team. She advanced to national team consideration after being named to the first team All-District list last month.

Koncak was the top performer for the Sooners in every event during the 2006 season. She won the 2006 Big 12 All-Around title and finished in a tie for second in the floor exercise at the Big 12. She later tied for first in the all-around at the NCAA Central Regional, helping the Sooners win the team title.

She tied for second on bars and beam and tied for third on the floor at the regional. She earned NCAA All-America honors after finishing eighth in the all-around and tying for eighth on the beam at the NCAA Championships.

She earned Big 12 Gymnast of the Week honors three times during the 2006 season and was ranked in the top 25 nationally in every event and was sixth in the all-around. A two-time selection to the Big 12 All-Academic first team, she has had a 4.0 in her four of her six semesters of academic work at OU. She served as president of the 2005-2006 University of Oklahoma Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and will serve as president of the national committee in 2006-2007.

This marks the first time for Koncack-Schumann to earn All-District and All-America honors from CoSIDA. Nominated by members of CoSIDA, a student- athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic and athletic eligibility, be a starter or key reserve and have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average to be considered for the team.

True freshmen, redshirt freshmen and transfer students who are in their first year at the institution are not eligible for the team. Schools were limited to three nominations each for the men's and women's teams.

Three Sooner women, Koncak-Schumann, sophomore Gabby Baker of the tennis team and Amparo Gala Marco, golf, earned All-District honors in May. Baker joined Koncack-Schumann on the first team while Gala Marco was a second-team selection.

Koncak-Schumann is the second Sooner to earn first-team honors this week. Senior Tommy Garrison, of the tennis team, was named to the men's at-large team on Tuesday.

The five national honorees -- Kevin Bookout was a third-team selection in men's basketball and Aaron Ivey and Ryan Rohlinger were second- team honorees in baseball -- are the most in one academic year for OU in the history of the CoSIDA Academic All-America program which is more than 55 years old.

The two first-team selections are the most since Stacey Dales (women's basketball) and David Johnston (men's at-large) were selected to the first team in 2002.
