May 18, 2006 | Men's Golf
NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's golf team is in 10th place after the first round of the NCAA Central Regional at Sand Ridge Golf Club just outside of Cleveland, Ohio.
The Sooners posted a first-round team total of 292 (+8) at Sand Ridge's 7,137-yard, par-71 layout.
Shawn LaFontaine recorded OU's low round of the day with a one-over-par 72. A senior from Cobourg, Ontario, LaFontaine was one-under through 13 holes until a bogey at the 14th. He double-bogeyed the difficult par-3 17th before a birdie on his final hole.
All-American Anthony Kim and Big 12 runner-up Brodie Flanders shot matching two-over 73s in Thursday's round. Both were even-par at the turn. Flanders made a triple-bogey on the 10th hole, but recovered nicely with birdies at the 14th and 18th.
Kim, a unanimous All-Big 12 selection in 2006, birdied his first hole of the day only to bogey No. 2. The La Quinta, Calif., native then strung together 10 consecutive pars before a bogey at 13. He birdied the15th before a double-bogey at 16 that left him at two-over.
Sophomore Phillip Bryan and senior Justin Fraley also shot matching rounds, posting a pair of three-over-par 74s.
Bryan, from Mustang, Okla., and Fraley, a native of Rowlett, Texas were both even-par on the back nine after recording three-over 38s on the front.
Oklahoma State leads the team standings with a four-under-par total of 280, one shot clear of second-place Northwestern.
Northwestern's Chris Wilson holds the individual lead after a four-under-par 67. Four players stand one shot back.
The Big 12 Conference had a strong showing on day one with four schools (Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Texas and OU) among the top 10 on the leaderboard.
Second round action will begin at 7 a.m. CDT on Friday. The Sooners will begin teeing off at approximately 1:05 p.m. and will be paired with TCU and Purdue.
The top 10 teams from the Central Regional, as well as the top two individuals on non-qualifying teams, will advance to play at the NCAA Championships, May 31-June 3 at the Crosswater Golf Club at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore.
