OKLAHOMA CITY -- On Tuesday the Oklahoma House of Representatives honored the University of Oklahoma women's basketball team for representing Oklahoma "with integrity and class, showing the nation a quality of character that makes this state proud to claim this team as our own."

House Resolution 1104, by state Rep. Jeff Hickman, praised the team for having "demonstrated great character and perseverance," winning the 2006 Big12 regular season and tournament championships and ultimately reaching the "Sweet 16" in the NCAA Tournament.

"This season, as they won one Big 12 game after another, the OU women's team won a special place in the hearts of all Oklahomans," said Hickman, R-Dacoma. "They truly became Oklahoma's team."

Hickman served as the public address announcer for OU women's basketball as well as the Big 12 Basketball Tournament in Kansas City and Dallas before being elected to public office.

OU is the first in Big 12 history to have a perfect record against all other Big 12 teams, achieving 19 wins and no losses in both regular season and tournament play. The team compiled an overall 31-5 record this year. In addition, Head Coach Sherri Coale won her 200th career game during the 2006 season and was named Big 12 and Region 5 Coach of the Year.

"During my years announcing the Big 12 Tournament and OU home games, I had a front-row seat to observe many of the great coaches in women's basketball in America," Hickman said. "You will not find another coach who is more dedicated to the success of their student-athletes than Sherri Coale who judges her success not by wins and losses but by the type of person these young women have become when they leave her program, graduate from the University and leave the game of basketball.

Sherri Coale is someone truly in this business for the right reasons."
