Men's Tennis Faces Two Weekend Road Matches

Men's Tennis Drops Bedlam Match, 5-2

April 22, 2006 | Men's Tennis

STILLWATER, Okla. In the last match of the regular season, the University of Oklahoma men's tennis team fell, 5-2, in a tough match to Oklahoma State in Stillwater. With the loss, OU drops to 14-11 overall and 1-6 in conference matches.

The Sooners were the first to get on the board after winning the doubles point. At No. 3, seniors Lee Gregg and Matt Long walked off with the first win after handing Felipe Diaz and Ivan Puchkarov an 8-3 loss. Senior Alexei Ivanov and junior Marek Velicka clinched the point for OU with an 8-5 upset over Daniel and Nathan Byrnes.

Closing out doubles competition was the match at No. 2, where senior No. 51 Tommy Garrison and sophomore Federico Chavarria fell to Tomas Bohunkicky and Artsem Burmistrau, 8-5.

Despite starting off strong in doubles, the Sooners could not find much success in singles and lost the first four matches in straight sets. Freshmen Cale Planck and Sergey Avdeyev, Garrison and Ivanov dropped their matches at the Nos. 4, 6, 3 and 2 spots, respectively.

At No. 1, No. 62 Velicka played a closely fought match against No. 14 Daniel Byrnes. After losing the first set, Velicka came back with a tiebreaker win in the second set but fell, 6-2, in the third set.

The only Sooner to win his singles match was Gregg, who faced Diaz at No. 5. This was no the first time the two have competed against each other, as they have matched up in the past three meetings between the Sooners and Cowboys. Although Gregg had never defeated Diaz, Gregg did not let that deter him. In straight sets, Gregg handed Diaz a, 7-6 (4), 6-1, loss to give the Sooners' their second point of the match.

Oklahoma will have a few days off before traveling to Waco, Texas, on April 28 through April 30 to compete in the Big 12 Championships.
