McCutchen Captures Big 12 Honor

March 08, 2006 | Baseball

DALLAS, Texas -- A day after the No. 23 Sooners (13-4) won their fourth consecutive game, 10-5 over TCU, and their sixth win in the last seven games, senior captain Daniel McCutchen was chosen as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Baseball  Co-Pitcher of the Week.

McCutchen shared the honor with Nebraska's Joba Chamerlain, and the two were chosen in voting by a panel of media covering Big 12 baseball for games played Feb. 28-Mar. 6.

It marks the first career award for McCutchen (3-2, 3.37 ERA), who lasted 10 innings and struck out six batters in his first complete-game shutout on Friday versus UC Riverside.

Texas' Nick Peoples was tabbed the conference's player of the week.

McCutchen is the second Sooner to be honored by the conference this year.  Junior Joseph Hughes earned his first player of the week accolade on Feb. 21.

McCutchen's performance on Friday against UC Riverside was the second complete game of career (April 28, 2005, vs. Nebraska) and the second consecutive start in which he dominated the opposition.

On Feb. 24 against Memphis, the Norman native lasted 8 2/3 innings and tied a season high with 10 strikeouts but suffered the loss.  McCutchen took a no-hitter into the sixth inning that day against the Tigers.

In his last two starts, McCutchen has thrown 18 2/3 innings and struck out 16 batters, opposite two walks.  He ranks second in the Big 12 in strikeouts (29) and is expected to get the start on Friday at L. Dale Mitchell Park as the Sooners battle visiting Centenary.
