FT. WORTH, Texas - The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team extended its winning streak to five matches with a 4-3 win over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday in Ft. Worth, Texas. The Sooners improved to 8-3 overall with their first-ever win over the Ragin' Cajuns.
Oklahoma started off strong by winning all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, junior Marek Velicka and senior Alexei Ivanov defeated Amanjot Singh and Evghenii Corduneanu, 8-4, which was only Singh and Corduneanu's second loss of the spring season. Senior Tommy Garrison and sophomore Federico Chavarria improved to 5-2 overall with an 8-4 victory over Robin Ley and Dusan Tabak. Also competing in doubles were senior Matt Long and sophomore Ryan Thomas, who remain undefeated at 4-0 after they upended Matthieu Truong and Arlen Domoney, 8-4.
In singles, Oklahoma won at the No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 positions. At No. 2, Ivanov took his match in straight sets against Tabak, 6-3, 6-1. Senior Lee Gregg picked up a win at No. 5 against Domoney, while Thomas won at No. 6 and improved to a perfect 5-0 record in spring competition.
The 60th-ranked Sooners' win over the No. 35 Ragin' Cajuns is the first time this season that they have defeated a higher ranked team. Louisiana-Lafayette dropped to 5-2 with the loss.
Oklahoma will return to action on March 10 against Texas-San Antonio at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman.
