HONOLULU, Hawaii - The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team downed Bowdoin College, 7-0, on Friday in Honolulu, Hawaii. With the win, the Sooners improved to 13-3 and extended their winning streak to 10.
No. 42 Oklahoma won matches at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. At the No. 1 position, No. 28 Alexei Ivanov and Marek Velicka defeated Garrett Gates and Sam Bitetti, 8-3. Federico Chavarria and Tommy Garrison teamed up to take Alex White and Andrew Fried, 8-2, at the No. 2 spot. Matt Long and Ryan Thomas rounded out doubles competition with an 8-2 win over Alex Caughron and Blake Wheale at No. 3 doubles.
Long and Thomas retained their spotless 7-0 dual record with the win. The tandems of Ivanov and Velicka and Chavarria and Garrison also improved their winning streaks and have now won their last seven matches.
The Sooners continued to dominate the Polar Bears in singles and took all matches in straight sets. Ryan Thomas, who commanded the No. 6 position, extended his spring dual record in singles to 10-0 after handing Wheale a, 6-1, 6-0, loss. Other Sooners who extended their winning streaks were Lee Gregg with 10 straight wins, Ivanov with seven wins and Sergey Avdeyev with five wins.
Oklahoma will have a week off before opening Big 12 play against No. 48 Nebraska on Sunday, March 26, at at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. If the Sooners win the match, they will tie the longest winning streak under head coach Paul Lockwood.
