Kim Leads, Sooners Fourth at Hall of Fame
March 17, 2006 | Men's Golf
HUMBLE, Texas The University of Oklahoma men's golf team stands in fourth place, while junior Anthony Kim is the early leader at the Hall of Fame Invitational at Redstone Golf Club just outside of Houston.
Kim, a two-time All-American and the 2005 Big 12 Player of the Year, fired a bogey-free five-under-par 67 in Friday's first round to take a four shot lead over Jhonatton Vegas of Texas.
Friday's round marks the second time in as many tournaments that Kim has climbed to the top of the leaderboard in the early going. At the Ashworth Invitational, Feb. 27-28, Kim was tied for second after the first round before surging to the lead in the rain-shortened second round. He would go on to win the tournament by seven strokes.
Hall of Fame host Texas is the team leader after the first round, recording a 293 (+5) to stay one stroke ahead of defending champion Oklahoma State. OU is seven shots out of the lead after posting a team score of 300 (+12).
Sophomore Phillip Bryan is tied for 21st after shooting 75 (+3) in round one. Seniors Brodie Flanders and Justin Fraley recorded rounds of 78 and 80, respectively. Junior Nick Sheedy also carded an 80 to complete the Sooners' first round scoring.
The second round of the Hall of Fame Invitational is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. (CST) on Saturday. The final 18 holes will be played Sunday.
