Men's Tennis Extends Winning Streak to Nine

March 10, 2006 | Men's Tennis

NORMAN, Okla. With 7-0 victories over Texas-San Antonio and Oklahoma Baptist in a doubleheader, the University of Oklahoma men's tennis team improved to 12-3 overall and extended its winning streak to nine matches on Friday in two home matches in Norman.

“We competed very hard today,” said OU head coach Paul Lockwood. “We continue to progress, and I think this is a great way to start Spring Break and prepare for the three matches we have.”

In the first match of the day against UT-San Antonio, senior Alexei Ivanov and junior Marek Velicka won at No. 1 doubles by defeating Anthony Portois and Hetori Chaves, 8-3. Senior Matt Long and sophomore Ryan Thomas clenched the doubles point and put the Sooners on the board after handing Adam Becker and Shaun Michael Stewart an 8-4 loss. At No. 2, sophomore Federico Chavarria and senior Tommy Garrison rounded out doubles play with an 8-6 victory over Andre Moreira and Robin Fernandes.

In singles competition, the Sooners won all matches in straight sets. Garrison clenched the match for Oklahoma with a win at No. 3 singles.

The Sooners' success continued in its match against Oklahoma Baptist as they once again shut out their opponent. Oklahoma changed the lineup for doubles by putting Long and Thomas at No. 1 doubles, Chavarria and senior Lee Gregg at the No. 2 spot and freshmen Sergey Avdeyev and Cale Planck at No. 3. With the win, Long and Thomas are now at a perfect 6-0 record this season.

The Oklahoma lineup also changed in singles, with Gregg assuming the No. 1 spot, followed by Avdeyev, Thomas, Long, Chavarria and Planck. The Sooners cruised to another shutout by winning all matches in straight sets. Thomas improved to 9-0 in spring matches and 10-1 overall this season, while Gregg picked up his ninth straight victory.

The Sooners are in the midst of their second longest winning streak under Lockwood. The longest run under Lockwood's tenure came in 2005 when OU began the season 11-0. Oklahoma will look to continue its streak as the team travels to Honolulu, Hawaii, next week to compete against Hawaii on March 14, Hawaii-Pacific on March 15 and Bowdoin on March 17.
