WAIKOLOA, Hawaii The University of Oklahoma men's golf team is tied for sixth place after the first day at the University of Hawaii-Hilo Intercollegiate.
The Sooners recorded a first-round team score of 279 (-5) in very windy conditions at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course.
"We gave away a few strokes coming in due to the conditions, but I was pleased with the way we hung in there," OU head coach Jim Ragan said.
Leading the charge for OU was senior Justin Fraley, whose first round 66 (-5) leaves him in a tie for fourth in the individual standings, two strokes behind Pablo Martin of Oklahoma State. Senior Brodie Flanders fired a two-under 69 and is tied for 21st.
Completing the first-round scoring for the Sooners were senior Shawn LaFontaine and sophomore Phillip Bryan, who both finished with a one-over-par 72.

"I'm obviously very pleased with the way Justin played today," Ragan said. "He really played a great round in some tough conditions, and Brodie Flanders also put together a very steady, no-frills round. Our other three players played pretty good as well and we're looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow."
Oklahoma is 11 strokes back of first-round leader Georgia Tech, a top-three team in both the GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches Poll and the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
The second round of the UH-Hilo Intercollegiate begins Thursday morning.
