Three Sooners Named Academic All-District

February 08, 2006 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN, Okla. --  Erin Higgins (first team), Leah Rush (second team) and Chelsi Welch (second team) were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI women's basketball team. As a first team member, Higgins is now nominated for Academic All-America honors.

It is the first such honor for each of the players and marks the 10th time that an OU player has received the award.  The most recent OU recipient was Caton Hill in 2004.

Erin Higgins is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection, while Leah Rush and Chelsi Welch have both earned one conference academic honor.

To be eligible for the Academic All-District Team the student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.

Oklahoma (19-4) is in first place with a Big 12 record of 9-0, which is the best start in league history. The Sooners host Kansas (13-6, 3-6) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. General admission and reserved level tickets remain for the contest.  The game will be broadcast on KOKC (1520 AM), in addition to a live webcast on the premium O-Zone on SoonerSports.com.

The OU and Baylor game will be broadcast nationally by Fox Sports Net with Kevin Eschenfelder on play-by-play and Debbie Antonelli on color commentary.  Tip time for the game has been set at 2:30 p.m.
