NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team will host its first three matches of the spring on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 12 p.m. and Monday, Feb. 27, at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. The Sooners will play host to Missouri State (0-1) on Saturday and Oral Roberts (2-5) and Cameron (1-0) on Monday.
No. 55 Oklahoma is 3-3 overall and 2-1 against teams in the Central region. In their last outing, the Sooners fell 5-2 in a tough match to No. 58 Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
Saturday's match will mark the first time that Oklahoma and Missouri State have met in each program's history. The Sooners will match up against the Golden Eagles for the 34th time, with Oklahoma owning a 25-8 all-time record. Oklahoma is perfect in matches against Cameron with a 4-0 record.
Admission is free to all home matches. On Saturday, the first 100 fans in attendance will receive a free signed team photo.
Men's Tennis Loses to Alabama, 5-2
The Sooners fell to 3-3 on the season after dropping a 5-2 decision to No. 58 Alabama on Saturday, Feb. 10.
Oklahoma won the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots. Junior Marek Velicka and senior Alexei Ivanov, ranked No. 20 in the country, defeated Javier Bes and Joseph Jung, 8-3. Sophomore Federico Chavarria and senior Tommy Garrison also recorded an 8-3 victory over Sammy Struyf and Mathieu Thibaudeau.
In singles, Alabama took wins in five of the six matches. In the last match of the night, freshman Cale Planck dealt Dan Buikema a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 loss at No. 6 singles to put the score at 5-2.
The Sooners were slated to play No. 26 Auburn on Sunday, Feb. 11, but the match was cancelled due to cold weather.
Scouting Missouri State
The Bears are 0-1 this season after being shut out by Arkansas, 7-0, on Feb. 4.
Saturday will mark the first meeting between Oklahoma and Missouri State.
Scouting Oral Roberts
The Golden Eagles are 2-5 in spring matches with their two wins coming back-to-back against Creighton and Oklahoma Wesleyan.
Junior Tyrone Hill leads Oral Roberts at the No. 1 singles spot and has tallied a 2-5 record.
The Sooners are 25-8 all-time against the Golden Eagles. The last meeting between the two teams was on Feb. 4, 2005, when Oklahoma topped ORU, 6-1.
Scouting Cameron
Cameron has tallied a 1-0 record after defeating Cowley County Community College, 6-1, on Feb. 5.
Oklahoma owns a 4-0 record against the Aggies.
Sooners in the Rankings
Junior Marek Velicka fell to No. 74 in singles in the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings, released by the ITA on Monday. Velicka previously appeared in the polls at the No. 22 spot. Velicka ranks in doubles with senior Alexei Ivanov. The tandem, which has posted a 9-4 overall record this year, fell eight spots to No. 28.
Oklahoma sits at No. 55 in the team poll.
