ORLANDO, Fla. -- Baseball America honored the best in baseball on Tuesday in Orlando at the sixth annual Baseball America Awards Gala. OU 2008 signee Blake Beavan (Irving High School - Texas) was named the Youth Player of the Year by the publication. Beavan was honored for his junior season and performance in the IBAF World Championships. High School seniors are not eligible for the award.
The right-handed pitcher, who is a member of the USA Junior National Team, signed his letter of intent to attend the University of Oklahoma in early November. He is scheduled to join the Sooner baseball team for the 2008 season.
Beavan, a hard-throwing hurler from Irving, Texas, enjoyed his most memorable moment in the sport in August when he struck out 11 batters for Team USA against Cuba in the elimination game of the IBAF "AAA" World Championships.

A towering presence on the mound at 6-7, Beaven was also named an Aflac All-American and is projected by Baseball America as the No. 16 pick in the 2007 draft.
InsidePrepBaseball rates Beavan as the No. 2 prospect in the state of Texas and said the following about the future Sooner:
“Blake is the best arm strength guy in the class. He has an easy arm action, and the ball is a missile that flies out of his hand. He's a tall, projectible body guy who is likely still growing, and he has a dominating slider that works as a strikeout pitch to compliment the gas. He has explosive next-level stuff.”
