NORMAN, Okla., -- The Oklahoma wrestling team kicks off the 2006-07 season with its annual Red/White ranking match this Thursday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. at Hamilton Field House in Edmond, Okla.
The Sooners square off with one another to determine the starters at each weight for the 2006-07 season. The Sooners come into the season ranked No. 4 by National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). They return three All-Americans in Sam Hazewinkel, Matt Storniolo and Joel Flaggert.
“There are going to be a bunch of great matchups and the Oklahoma fans are going to see a lot of Oklahoma kids wrestling each other,” head coach Jack Spates said.
“We are really eager to see what our kids can do. We have a great combination of strong, experienced wrestlers and young, hard-working underclassmen. It is also great to wrestle alongside a perinneal power in the University of Central Oklahoma.”
The Sooners open the regular season Saturday, Nov. 4, in Norman, when they host Oklahoma City University and Missouri Valley in a double-dual beginning at 5:30 p.m.
“Saturday will be exciting as we kickoff our regular season, and, as coaches, we are really pleased with how we have been practicing,” continued Spates.
“All of our wrestlers are eager to get out on the mat and show what they can do. Everyone has put in a lot of work at practice and now it is time for the real thing.”
