No. 17 Volleyball Collects 20th Win

October 31, 2006 | Volleyball

NORMAN, Okla. Extending its non-conference win streak to seven and recording its first 20-win season since 1997, the No. 17 Oklahoma volleyball team swept TCU Tuesday night inside the Howard McCasland Field House.  The Sooners registered their 15th sweep of the season with a 30-13, 30-20, 30-23 win over the Horned Frogs.

The Sooners played TCU during their bye week in the Big 12 Conference and improved to 20-4 while TCU fell to 17-10 overall.

“TCU is a strong, quality opponent and I'm proud of our squad for taking control from the very first serve,” head coach Santiago Restrepo said.  “We caught TCU at the end of a weekend road trip so they probably weren't as rested as they normally are, but our squad didn't lose focus and kept up the intensity the entire match."

Offensively, setter Rachel Jackson led the Sooners to an OU rally-scoring record with a .440 hitting percentage in the three-game match.  Jackson added 47 assists to the offense and every hitter recorded a .350 clip or better.

Senior Joanna Schmitt continues to shine as she added her 13th double-double of the season and eighth straight match with double-digit kills.  Schmitt pounded a match-high 17 kills on a .467 hitting percentage while also collecting a match-high 10 digs.

Bridget Laplante and Eliane Santos also added offensive presence with 14 kills each as Laplante recorded a .444 clip while Santos did it on a .407 hitting percentage.  Sarah Weiland wasn't far behind with eight kills on a match-high .700 clip while Laura Tomes added seven kills to the Sooner offense.

The Oklahoma defense fed off of the offensive momentum as the Sooners held the Horned Frogs to a .151 hitting percentage as the Sooners recorded eight blocks against TCU.  Santos, the team's leading blocker, led all players with five block assists while Jackson and Weiland added three block assists each.

Oklahoma jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in game one and never looked back as it owned the lead the entire first frame.  TCU cut it to within two at 12-10, but Oklahoma rallied and closed out the match on an 8-0 run that was highlighted by three Schmitt kills, including one that ended the set at 30-13.

TCU took the opening 1-0 lead in the second frame, but it would be the last time the Horned Frogs would lead as Oklahoma took the lead back at 2-1 and wouldn't lose it.  The offense was on fire in the second game as it recorded only two errors and a .550 clip and was led by Schmitt who added nine kills in the second game.

The third game was much closer as TCU tied it up 10 different times, but Oklahoma was able to pull it out and take the sweep.  Santos led the Sooners with six kills in the final game as OU took the game and the match with the 30-23 win.

After hosting TCU, Oklahoma steps back into Big 12 play in a big way.  The Sooners face their toughest opponent of the season in No. 1 and undefeated Nebraska.  The Sooners and Huskers will meet Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Lincoln, Neb., for a top-25 showdown.  The Sooners, who have beaten every team in the Big 12 this season except Nebraska, will be looking for their first win over the Huskers since 1997.  The match will be televised on a tape-delay on CSTV Sunday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.
