Sooners Continue Play in Tulsa

NORMAN, Okla.--The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team continued play Saturday in the Wilson/ITA Central Regional hosted by the University of Tulsa.

In singles the 64-player singles draw senior Marek Velicka, seeded No. 4, squared off against NU's Adrian Szatmary Saturday in the round of 16. He defeated Szatmary in two sets, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals. Velicka is scheduled to play Ricardo Soriano of Tulsa on Sunday.

In the singles consolation bracket junior Ryan Thomas met Juan Carlos Nunez of UALR Saturday in the round of 16. He defeated Nunez 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals, which were played later Saturday. In his next match, Thomas faced Nathan Byrnes of Oklahoma State, winning by default. He is scheduled to play Olof Sjolund of Tulsa Sunday as well.

Velicka and junior Federico Chavarria teamed up to compete in the 32 team doubles competition. The duo, which was seeded second, competed against Tulsa's Ricardo Soriano and Lucques Maasdorp in the quarterfinals Saturday. The pair was defeated, 8-4, eliminating them from the tournament.

Also competing in doubles were Thomas and freshman Ondrej Kacmar. The duo suffered a loss to Daniel and Nathan Byrnes of Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals, 8-4. The loss dropped them from the tournament.

Tournament play will continue through Monday Oct. 23. Results will be posted on SoonerSports.com as soon as they become available.
