NORMAN, Okla., -- The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and its media web site, InterMat, released the 2006-07 preseason poll and has Oklahoma slotted fourth.
The poll also ranked seven Sooners in the individual weight rankings. Sam Hazewinkel at 125-pounds is ranked No. 1, Matt Storniolo at 149-pounds is ranked No. 2, Will Rowe at 157-pounds is ranked No. 19, Jarrod King at 165-pounds is ranked No. 15, Josh Weitzel and Shane Siebert at 174-pounds are No. 18 and Joel Flaggert at 197-pounds is ranked No. 4.
The top-five ranking comes after the Sooners finished third in the 2006 NCAA Championships where Jack Spates was named the 2006 NWCA Coach of the Year.
Additionally, TheWrestlingMall.com released its poll on Friday and tabbed the Sooners ninth.
OU has been ranked in two other top-25 polls recently. W.I.N. magazine tabbed OU as the No. 3 ranked team in their preseason poll and RevWrestling.com had Oklahoma at No.8.
The Sooners finished 2006 with an 11-6-1 record, runner-up at the Big 12 Championships and the program's fourth third-place finish out of the last five years at the NCAA Championships.
The Sooners welcome 13 newcomers for the 2006-07 season and return 19 wrestlers from last season, including All-Americans Hazewinkel, Storniolo and Flaggert.
Oklahoma opens the season Nov. 4 when it hosts Missouri Valley and Oklahoma City University in a double-dual at the Howard McCasland Field House.
