NORMAN, Okla. -- The OU baseball team completed game one of the Annual Red-White Series on Tuesday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The white team, powered by its performance at the plate, rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to top the red squad, 8-7.
After holding a three-run lead, the white team surrendered four runs in the top half of the seventh inning but came back in the bottom half of the frame thanks to a two-run walk-off double by junior Jackson Williams.
Junior Ryan Mottern started on the mound for the white team and allowed one run opposite freshman Danny Grande, who gave up three runs.
"I thought today was a good intrasquad," said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. "Ryan threw outstanding and completed what has been a really good fall season after a great summer in Alaska. It was important for him to come back to Norman and continue that trend since he is a leader on this pitching staff.
"I also thought Danny Grande pitched well despite giving up the three runs in the third inning."
Grande had the task of facing Williams and juniors Joe Dunigan and Jarod Freeman and freshman Devin Shepherd.
Dunigan (triple, single) and Freeman (single, two-RBI double) each collected two hits in the game, while Shepherd had the big day finishing 4-for-4 with three RBIs (two-run home run, two doubles and a single).
For the red squad, juniors Mike Gosse and Kyle Biery led the way with two hits apiece.
"All fall, the coaching staff has been extremely pleased with the way our guys continue to develop offensively," added Golloway. "Coach (Tim) Tadlock and Coach (Damon) Minor are working well together with our hitters and have made a huge impact."
The Sooners will continue the series on Wednesday with game two tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The series will conclude on Thursday with the same start time.
