Blundell in Second at Oklahoma Int.

NORMAN, Okla.-- The weather improved for the second round of the Oklahoma Intercollegiate at Oak Tree Golf Club, in Edmond, Okla., Monday, and so did the scores.

Oklahoma fired a second-round 296 (+16), 17 shots better than its first round Sunday, and remains in fifth place heading into tomorrow's final round. Monday's tournament scores averaged more than three strokes lower than Sunday's.

With Sunday's wind and rain out of the picture, Oklahoma freshman Ben Blundell, playing as an individual, took advantage of opportune scoring conditions with a 3-under-par 69. The Rowlett, Texas, native hit 16 greens en route to a tie for low round of the tournament. Blundell finds himself in second place, just two stokes behind Tulsa's Sam Korbe, who fired a second-round 71 and sits at 143 (+1).

“It was a pretty boring round out there,” said Blundell. “I hit a lot of greens and knocked in a few putts. I had one three-putt that I am a little upset about.”

The round was six strokes better than Blundell's previous collegiate low of 75, shot in the opening round of the Fighting Illini Invitational last month. Blundell leads the field in birdies made with nine, two more than Tulsa's Nic Geyger.

Pepperdine transfer J.J. Wood had the best round among players contributing to OU's team score, carding a 1-over-par 72. The senior from Yuma, Ariz., improved 11 shots over his opening round 83. Coming in with matching scores of 74 were junior Phillip Bryan and freshman Blaine Butner. Rounding out the scoring for the Sooners were freshmen Eric Durbin and Jesse Schutte who fired rounds of 76 and 78, respectively.

Tulsa leads the team standings after turning in a tournament low 289 (+5) Monday. Combined with yesterdays 305 (+21), the Golden Hurricane is up six shots on second-place LSU. Tulsa's Korbe improved a stroke over yesterday's 72, firing an even-par-71. Korbe leads the field in par-4 scoring at +1 on the tournament.

Baylor (600) stands in third place and is followed by Ohio State (608), Oklahoma (609), Arkansas (612), Michigan (614) and SMU (618).

Final-round action will begin Tuesday at 8 a.m.
