NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 8/8 Oklahoma Sooners (7-4-1, 0-2) were defeated by No. 9/12 Iowa State (10-4, 1-0) 19-16 Saturday evening at the Howard McCasland Field House.
“I can't figure out what went wrong tonight because we have been working so hard,” said head coach Jack Spates. “Our performance made it look like we have not been working at all.”
Jake Hager led off for the Sooners, defeating Richard Schopf by a decision of 7-4 in their heavyweight match up.
“I was happy to get a win but I was disappointed in the way I finished the match,” said Hager. “I have been training too hard to let points get away like that. I needed to get bonus points for the team today and I just didn't get it done.”
The dual's premier match featured No. 1 Teyon Ware versus No. 2 Nate Gallick. Gallick defeated Ware 4-3 to claim his sixth victory over the two-time National Champion. Ware scored an early takedown of Gallick but gave up a takedown and two escapes to drop the decision. The two wrestlers had met six previous times with Gallick defeating Ware in all but one match. Ware's lone victory came in the 141 pound NCAA final last year.
“There were some bright spots tonight,” continued Spates. “I thought Shane Vernon really battled hard against the No. 2 wrestler in the country (157). I thought Teyon (Ware) and Sam (Hazewinkel) battled extremely hard, but overall I don't think our effort and our intensity was there.”
Hazewinkel, No. 2, scored a major decision in his 125 pound match by defeating Ben Hanisch 18-5. Also scoring for the Sooners was No. 11 Matt Storniolo, defeating Jason Knipp by a decision of 5-3 in their 149 pound match. In addition, No. 4 Joel Flaggert ended the dual by scoring a fall in his 197 pound match against Joe Curran at the 1:20 mark.
The Sooners are home again next Friday, Feb. 3, when they host Arizona State at 7 p.m., inside the Howard McCasland Field House. The match will also mark Danny Hodge Night. Hodge, an Oklahoma wrestling legend, will be signing autographs before the match from 6-7 p.m.
