Michael Neal Picks Up Big 12 Honor

NORMAN, Okla. Oklahoma junior guard Michael Neal was honored as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Co-Rookie of the Week today after scoring a team-high 15 points in a 60-48 win over Texas Tech on Saturday.

Neal, a 6-3, 191-pounder from Mesquite, Texas, had three points against the Red Raiders with four minutes remaining in the game.  With OU holding a 48-40 lead, Neal then made 3-pointers on four of the Sooners' next five possesions to put them up 60-44.  The four treys came within a span of 2:47.

Neal, who played 21 minutes off the bench, was 5-for-9 from the field, 4-for-7 from 3-point range and 1-for-1 from the free throw line on the day while also registering a pair of steals.

The former first-team junior college All-American is now averaging 10.5 points per game for the 11-4 Sooners (2-2 in Big 12 play).  He ranks third in the conference with his 2.7 treys per contest and ranks seventh with his .361 3-point field goal percentage.  Neal has made at least two 3-pointers in 10 of his 13 games.  He missed OU's Nebraska (lost by one point) and Missouri (lost by two points) games with a strained groin.

Neal shared the honor with Oklahoma State junior forward Torre Johnson.  Texas' Daniel Gibson and Colorado's Richard Roby shared the Player-of-the-Week honor.

The Sooners play twice this week: at Baylor on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CST (televised on the Sooner Sports Network) and at home against No. 5 Texas on Saturday at 8 p.m. (ESPN2).
