NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma volleyball team opened the 2005 season with a strong start after recording a victory over TCU Saturday night inside the University Rec Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The Sooners took three out of four games from the Horned Frogs, winning the opening game and the final two (30-24, 23-30, 30-22, 30-19).
“I thought we did some really good things tonight and I'm proud of the girls,” head coach Santiago Restrepo said. “I was most impressed with our double-digit blocks and strong hitting percentage.”
It was no surprise that junior outside hitter Joanna Schmitt was the star of the match for Oklahoma. Schmitt, a preseason All-Big 12 selection, posted a double-double and finished with a match-high 18 kills and hit at an impressive .325 clip.

Defensively, Schmitt led the way as well providing a team-high 13 digs for the Sooners. Schmitt now owns the OU rally-scoring mark in digs with 622. Schmitt passed previous record-holder Christina Maynes who had 621 digs.
“We need Joanna to have a double-double every match in order for us to be successful,” Restrepo said. “I thought her hitting percentage was very good tonight, especially for an outside hitter.”
The Sooners were strong offensively, hitting at a .347 clip in the three games they won and finishing with an overall hitting percentage of .278, which is just short of the OU four-game rally scoring record of .289.
Two other Sooners added double-digit kills to help guide OU to victory. Sophomore middle blocker Anna Stadel hit at a .417 clip while pounding 13 kills. Senior outside hitter Gabriela Tonon added 10 kills while junior Laura Tomes posted eight en route to the Sooner victory.
Quarterbacking the OU offense was junior setter Rachel Jackson who assisted on 40 kills for the Sooners while sophomore Julie Chester came in to add seven assists.
Sophomore-transfer defensive specialist Hannah Sharp (Louisville) showed promise in her Sooner debut, collecting 11 digs in the match. Junior defensive specialist Anna Monsen also contributed defensively with seven digs for the Sooners. Setting a career high was sophomore Lindsay Schuessler who came in to add two digs for OU.
Oklahoma was even more impressive at the net with 12 team blocks. Stadel tied a career-high with two solo blocks while also adding five block assists. Senior middle blocker Jennifer Adams added three block assists and one solo for the Sooner defense. Sophomore transfer Sarah Weiland (Tulane University) also made her Sooner debut and added two block assists.
Restrepo, in his second season at Oklahoma, is now 2-0 in season openers. Oklahoma now holds a record of 1-0 on the young season and begins tournament action next weekend.
The Sooners next stop will be the Hampton Inn Bama Bash in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Oklahoma will square off against Indiana Friday, Sept. 2, and finish the doubleheader with a test against NCAA qualifier Loyola (Chicago) that evening. The Sooners round out the four-team tournament with a Sept. 3 meeting against host-school Alabama.
