National Champions to Visit White House

NORMAN, Okla.   The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team, the 2005 NCAA National Champions, are set to visit the nation's capital on Tuesday to be honored by President George W. Bush at the White House. 

The Sooners will be part of a group of NCAA championship teams in Washington D.C. for the White House's annual NCAA Champions Day.  

“It's quite an honor to be invited to the White House,” said OU head coach Mark Williams, 2005 NCAA Coach-of-the-Year.  “My team is extremely proud to have the opportunity to meet President Bush and to be part of the NCAA Champions Day.  This honor exemplifies the hard work and dedication of this team over the years.”

The event will include a photo opportunity for each team, remarks from the president and will conclude with representatives from each school presenting a gift to the president.  Athletics Director Joe Castiglione, Senior Woman Administrator Stephanie Rempe, Williams and the rest of the Oklahoma team will be presenting President Bush with an OU flag autographed by the team.

The Sooners are coming off their third national championship in the past four years and for the second-straight year, OU led all schools in All-America honors with 13.  One of those All-Americans, David Henderson, became the program's 18th individual NCAA champion by capturing the title on the still rings.
