OU Set To Play In 2005 Preseason WNIT

July 06, 2005 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma women's basketball program is one of 16 teams invited to participate in the 2005 Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament announced today by the WNIT Executive Board.

“The WNIT kicks off the college basketball season providing some great match-ups that might not otherwise ever come to fruition,” said Sooner Coach Sherri Coale.  “This year's bracket, which promises some interesting possibilities, is no exception.

“We are honored to be able to host the opening round. And look forward to joining with our fans to earn the right to continue competing toward the tournament title in the Lloyd Noble Center. This tournament can generate tremendous momentum for a season.  We're excited that our fans have an opportunity to help us in a very tangible way as we pursue this early season championship.”

The field for the prestigious tournament that kicks off the women's college basketball season includes nine teams that played in the postseason last year: Boston College, Chattanooga, Connecticut, Indiana State, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oral Roberts, Richmond and SMU.

The tournament opens Nov. 11, with second-round games on Nov. 13 and 14, semifinals on Nov. 16-17, and the championship on Sunday, Nov. 20.  All games will be played on home campuses, which are determined after each round.

In last year's Preseason WNIT, Notre Dame defeated Ohio State for the title and went on to a 27-5 season.

OU's last participation in a preseason WNIT event was the 1994-95 campaign. The Sooners lost their opening round at Montana State.
